The Texas Association of Health Plans is an advocacy and government relations firm representing all major health insurers, Medicare, Medicaid health plans operating in Texas. Our operations are small (staff of 6) but mighty, producing regular, comprehensive communications and advocacy materials for both the Capitol audience, our association members, and the public. We seek to inform, educate and advocate for priorities that make the health care system more accessible, navigable, transparent, and affordable for all Texans.

The Director of Communications, which reports directly to the CEO, requires media relations, writing, editing, developing comprehensive communications strategies, prepping the CEO for media interviews and public speaking appearances, and producing opinion pieces, talking points, press releases, weekly newsletters and more.

• Knack for translating complex policy issues into real-world, easily digestible communications materials.
• Knowledge of health care issues and how the Texas Legislature and government agencies operate is preferred.
• 5-7 years experience handling communications in a health care, government or related setting.
• Excellent writing skills and a portfolio of opinion pieces, press statements, and other written materials.
• Ability to demonstrate how he or she has interacted with members of the media, pitched story ideas, and secured successful placement of story ideas and/or guided the direction of stories to the benefit of his/her organization.
• Intermediate social media skills (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram) desired.
• Basic graphic design, including Adobe InDesign, and website HTML (webflow and Wordpress) skills, are a bonus. (not required)
